Only ONE person on another list serve has heard about OLD JOY. Her local reviewer told her it wasn't much of a movie.
It reminded me in some ways of another overrated film, THE SAME RIVER TWICE, which was a documentary about middle-aged former river rafters in the Grand Canyon. OLD JOY beats it by being equally self-indulgent and even more boring.
I guess I can safely advise viewers to skip OLD JOY. |

I'd rather not sit through the movie again to find out, but didn't it turn out that {BEGIN SPOILER} the guy who was beaten in the bar in the first scene we see (the conclusion if the story were told cronologically) was not the same guy who committed the rape? In other words, the mob took revenge on the wrong guy? {END SPOILER} I gave up not long after fast-forwarding through most of the infamous rape scene, so there may be something I'm getting wrong, but I read that spoiler question someplace and wondered if it was really true.
Just to clarify things
No they (or rather he- Alex's ex-boyfriend) beat to death the guy who broke Alex's (current-Cassel) boyfriend's arm etc . Cassel was asking and pushing people looking for the a guy named (Tenio?? or something like that) . The guy who was killed was a friend or lover or whatever to the real rapist who just stood there watching his friend gettiing pummeled for his deeds with a weird creepy grin on his face- like it was exciting to watch |

Moved from Current Film:

I really enjoyed Natalie Portman's role as Alice/Jane. Clive Owen was good as well.
Lots of dialouge, so I had to concentrate on staying more focused than I do with other movies. Alice seemed to be all over the place in her efforts to keep on top of her many trysts and lovers.
I'll try and finish what I've started with my thoughts later on. But that's off the top of my head from two weeks ago.
Alice seemed to be all over the place in her efforts to keep on top of her many trysts and lovers.
Trish wrote: what do you mean - there was only one lover (perhaps two)
Your right. It was only two (Larry and Dan).
Quote: Anna (Julia Roberts) was good, but I thought that her performance was missing something... I was looking for a little more depth (maybe I'm used to that from her previous movie roles).
Trish wrote: I think what you saw in her performance - which is unlike most of Roberts' work - a real depression and a self-loathing at the root of her character - so she seems flat in expression (in comparison to other roles she's played). I really believe Roberts is undervalued in this film. Her character was just not a really likeable one . She makes choices that are selfish, self-destructive. I think it was a great performance, finally understated, devoid of the Robert's star-quality - which served the communication of the film's character.
Personally (and upon several more viewings) I can't really too much fault with any of the actors performances. (The writing may seem more stagey- less natural for some people, it was adapted from a play - but I liked it)
And I don't fault any of them. But as I said, I think it was some sort of personal expectation of previous roles Julia has played.
But you are right... I saw another side of Julia. Even in films where she's dealing with difficult issues (ie. Stepmom), her character here (Anna) was obvisouly in a dark place.
Overall, I really like the film and it may very well need a repeated viewing to go back and catch the inbetween areas of the film that could be better clarified. |

Closer really does work great on repeat viewings. |

I do plan to watch it again soon. Maybe on my 3-leg plane ride to NYC next week. |

Cate Blanchett backed out of the role of Anna (played by Julia Roberts) because Cate was pregnant. |

I saw A Prairie Home Companion recently and while this normally isn't my typical fare I did find some things that were pleasently surprising. And some that were less so.
While I've grown used to Altman's style, often his over use of improv can be annoying. Surprisngly the person who annoyed me the most was Meryl Streep! She was all over the place in this film and I am such a fan that it's almost a shame to have to admit it. And Lily Tomlin was almost as bad but not quite.
But thankfully Kevin Kline was there with tongue firmly planted in cheek as Guy Noir. Every time he was on the screen I laughed. He hasn't been this funny since The Pirates of Penzance and I think he may have even surpassed that performance.
Also wonderful were Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly. These are fine actors who know how to grab material, work it and work off of each other.
The film is made or not by the acting but it did have a slight and much needed plot. Essential to it was Virginia Madson who was perfect and in a small but pivotal role, Tommy Lee Jones.
If you think this kind of movie isn't for you, give it a try if for no reason other than Kevin Kline. He makes the whole experience worth it. |

Thanks to all those who replied to my Irreversible question both here and (specifically, Mo) by PM. I didn't want to sit through even a fast-forwarded viewing of the movie again just to find out, but I had always wondered about the answer to that. |

Thanks for the comments on Prairie Home Companion, marjy. It might be in the mailbox as I type. I heart Kline and am looking forward to his performance, and as an official member of S.A.S.S.Y. will let you know if she irks me too. |

Did you include this comment just because you knew it would get me? Of course, now the movie goes on my list. |

Nothing about PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION interests me. Not even the fact that Altman directed it. |

Nothing much about it interested me when I watched it. Cowboys Dusty and Rusty (are those their names?) were just the only bright spot for me. |

Joe -- Of course.
Wade -- OK, you've got me. What is S.A.S.S.Y.?
And for the record, the film was not my choice. I'm not a fan of the radio show either. In fact, I can't stand it. And Robert Altman has never been a director whose films I seek out just because he directs them. But I am a fan of good acting. And while I was disappointed in a few actors there were others who made the film worthwhile. |
