Okay, I'm sure Summer with Monika qualifies as an early sex comedy, and is next to go on.
Turns out I have 19 unwatched Bergmans, not including the extra copy of The Rite. |

Although the Tomatometer figures can be misleading, with the following set of figures I find that I happened to love all the movies rated above 90 (I have not seen Passion of Anna, Through a Glass Darkly or Shame).

By the way, I may be the only one, but I really didn't like Umberto D. I found it excessively schmaltzy and pandering. What connection it has to Wild Strawberries is beyond me. The fact that both are about older men and their circumstance is the only connection I can think of and that ain't much.
Umberto D. is totally different from Wild Strawberries but just as good in its way. More emotional but not schmaltzy IMO. |

I generally pay attention if the rating is much above 80% or below 20%. |

So that's how you got it so fast. And yes it is available but there appears to be a hold up at Netflix. Don't know what it's about. But I'm in a heavy work mode so I can be patient. Or at least I can try. |

Monarch of the Moon is a parody of ‘30's and 40's serials. It can be watched in black & white or color, and stars nobody you’ve ever heard of. Our Hero is Cal Crawford, whose not-so-secret identity (because everyone knows what it is) is The Yellow Jacket, who wears a black flight jacket with chevrons of yellow stripes. He has a backpack flying engine with little paddle-shaped wings that turn. It emits clouds of black smoke and looks rather silly. His sidekicks include Benny, a boy scout (or bear scout), a drunken pilot named Rusty, the obligatory pipe-smoking scientist, and Sally, a girl. She’s a bit ditzy. We later meet her sister Maxine, who’s a bit overbearing. There are also various evil Nazi spies. And then there’s the villain who has been dispatched to remove the Yellow Jacket from existence: Dragonfly, an Oriental villainess who is played by a Caucasian wearing the kind of makeup Zhang Ziyi wore in part of House of Flying Daggers. Dragonfly can deflect bullets with her fans (makes for an interesting fan dance) and has the Japbots, mechanical minions who look even sillier than anything else in this film. I haven’t even gotten to the title character and his moon maidens (dancing girls and spear carriers). Sigh. This is not half bad; they did a pretty good job of re-creating the look and feel of these old serials.
The second disc in this set is Destination Mars, a really good parody of ‘50's science fiction films. It’s sort of a cross between Plan 9 from Outer Space and Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, and has the same kind of pretentious cheesy dialogue found in Ed Wood films. (The phrase “foolish Earthlings” is hurled around a lot.) It’s also a musical. This one’s just in B&W. It is preceded by a hilarious mini-documentary about the director of this movie and his role in the ‘50's blacklist. This one’s the better film of the two, and is worth seeing. Both were made in conjunction with Dark Horse comics, and there is a miniature Yellow Jacket comic inside the DVD case. Recommended for fans of this sort of thing, of which I am one. |

Summer with Monika was quite good, but different than what I expected (based on only having viewed the three famous Bergmans). The Tartan Dvd had an on-screen essay that was helpful. I didn't know that Bergman was influenced heavily by the French poetic realism of Carne and , but it makes sense.
A few odd things from S w/ M. I thought the lead actor looked a bit like Leo Dicaprio. I didn't really get the scene where the lone camper trashes their boat and possessions and then they have an inconclusive brawl. Seemed quite odd and unexplained. Also Lelle hides and waylays "young Lund" but there's no repercussion from that. It's quite a good film, but a bit choppy and somewhat unclear about the passage of time. The essay explains that the first three weeks of shooting were ruined by lab damage of the negative and despite reshoots the actual summer scenes go by rather quickly. Worthless sidenote, it seemed humorous to me to hear people yell and be angry in Swedish.
Harriet Anderson is damned near perfect in the title role.
I like how she wants to escape from her younger brothers and sisters who make a fierce racket, but then the first thing she does is get pregnant and have a kid. Replicating her family experience.
I picked up The Virgin Spring and Persona on the way home this evening. |

Tomatometer just seems like such a goofy concept -- like ordering a piggly-wiggly burger or somesuch -- that I never go there. But, having followed your link, I notice that about half the Bergman films aren't even rated.
As for the NYT review of the new Eclipse Early Bergman set, the first two paragraphs were pretty annoying, but then it settles down into a good review when he actually discusses the films themselves.
I'd argue the opposite of the reviewer: the fact that Bergman's critical reputation has dropped from its previous peak means that this is a good time to introduce early Bergman films that otherwise many viewers would skip (precisely because he isn't seen as so important today).
My criticism would be that such a release isn't necessary because Tartan has already done a fine job of releasing the early (and middle) Bergmans. I guess some people are still trapped within region codes and haven't discovered ebay or the internet, but I'd prefer Criterion/Eclipse to focus on films that aren't yet out on Dvd.
But I don't blame Criterion for kicking off Eclipse with a well-known director with a reputation for high quality films. |

| Tomatometer is just an easy access to reviews by various critics, including the ones that I like to read. I wouldn't go there to get ratings on Bergaman movies. In fact I saw most Bergman movies long before I heard of Rotten Tomatoes. I do not think any of his better movies are absent from the tomatometer list, which just happens to give a score of 90+ to my favorites. Giving the link to the list was an effortless way to respond to someone asking for "Titles? Titles?", or so I thought. |
