The Maurice Chevalier musicals that keep popping up in the Pre-Code forums came from Netflix, as well as The Visitor, Perhaps, Love, The Dream of the Red Chamber, In Bruges and In the Land of the War Canoes. You can easily overwhelm yourself. Netflix is wasted on popular easy-to-find films, but if you want to go through the Werner Herzog film collection without owning them, it's the place to go. (Although why you wouldn't want to own a Werner Herzog film collection is another matter.) I haven't subscribed yet because I like to own films I and I like to look at the jacket (Netflix sends them in an envelope), but the sheer size of the catalog is hard to resist.

mo,

You might want to try Netflix's free trial membership, which I think lasts two weeks, to get a taste and see if you like it. They have distribution centers in the strangest places, BTW, like towns in Texas I never heard of. I recommend them.

I like to own them too. Netflix does give me a chance to try something out and decide if I really do want to own it. And if I don't like it, I can cross it off my list of films to buy.

Another good thing about Netflix is that you can put together a sequence of films you want them to send you. When they receive a returned film they send the next on the list. You can also jump the list if a new film appears that you're particularly interested in--for instance if Poltergay suddenly appears on DVD or Mo-Flixx or Marilyn mentions something you haven't heard of but sounds interesting, you can insert it high on the list. I like to see a wild (and wide) variety of films, from early silents to present and from as many countries and genres as I can manage, and Netflix is good for that.

I think my best comedy of the year maybe the pleasantly old fashioned Ghost Town.

Does In Bruges count as a comedy?

I, and probably many others, have a bit of an issue with studios releasing their Oscar bait late in the season (to be fresh in voters minds) on ltarget, imited releases (to be able to boast high cinema averages). These cynical ploys mean that most of the cinema going public can't be part of the buzz of awards season.

Amongst others, I have yet to see: Doubt, Revolutionary Road, The Reader, Milk and Benjamin Button.

I count In Bruges as a comedy. Very dark one, but even at the end, the protagonist is appalled he might have to spend eternity in Bruges, and you have that funny confrontration with the hotel matron near the end. I'm not sure what's the best comedy. Kung Fu Panda or Forbidden Kingdom, perhaps? Bolt? Definitely, Maybe? It's getting hard to tell what's a comedy and what's not.

I'd call it a comedy, too.

Just saw Ghost Town yesterday, jeremy. I'm a Ricky Gervais fan...partly because I've a friend who speaks with the exact same accent and has the exact same deliciously wicked sense of humor. But Gervais is endearing and I'd wanted to see the film when it was first advertised.

I actually won tickets to the Montreal premiere, courtesy of our local radio station. However they sent me the email informing me I'd won...on the day AFTER the premiere! (I'm still trying, to no avail) to get someone from their promotions dept.

But the movie - well put, jeremy, it is old fashioned and sweet. The pairing of Gervais and Kinnear is inspired, and some of the dialogue is laugh-out-loud.

It's cute. Doesn't quite peak as great, but I recommend it for light viewing.

In Bruges today.

Someone was asking about Revolutionary Road? Twitch Film reviewed it: http://twitchfilm.net/site/view/revolutionary-road-review/

I'm not going to read this - it's blocked at work and I have to get there...

At last, a Star Trek movie that might, just might have a hope of getting past all the pandering to the fanboys and into the realm of something interesting:

I think the necessity for a new cast in a different era has given them the chance to do something interesting with the franchise. Whether or not they seize that chance...

Your last sentence really impresses me. I know that you see a lot of pretty esoteric stuff...and I try to, too.
What I've heard (bad) about Netflix is that once you become a good customer, you have to wait longer for top choices. They are busier "hooking" the newbies so they'll purchase the more expensive packages.

Not true. I get things faster now than I used to.

And they aren't too concerned with hooking Canadians either. Which is too bad, because I'd bet we would give them a huge boost in numbers.

Saw Burn After Reading

(insert shrug)

Should probably make any comments in Couch With A View (which always makes me think of a longlost Forster sequel in which George and Lucy end up more domesticated than they anticipated.)
