I've had a huge crush on Emma Thompson ever since her wonderful Katherine in Henry V. Infinitely huggable, and the woman radiates intelligence and wit, which is a real turn-on.

Since Thompson and Hoffman have always been two of my favorite acting people, I do want to see LCH--the clips on the talk shows are very appealing. Like a friend of mine who turned against Laurence Olivier after he dumped Vivien and married Joan, I found it hard to like Kenneth Branagh when he dumped Emma. (Anyone who saw their "Robin and Marian" bit on her short-lived TV show had to think of them as the perfect couple. But then, so were Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis...)

I'm not sure it's as simple as "he dumped her" with Branagh and Thompson. There were, rumor has it, drugs involved (on his part, I hasten to add).

My friend the Brit hates Emma Thompson's guts, I'm not sure why. (And he's not too happy with Kenneth B, either.)

Then again, he REALLY hates Margaret Thatcher's guts. ...Actually, that one I understand more.

It's probably a class or Northern thing. Bet he loves Kate W.

It's probsably a class or Northern thing. Bet he loves Kate W.

LOL ~ yes, he is a northern boy and very much anti-class. (Don't get him started on the royal family.)
I'll have to ask him about Kate.

Per author Shanley, the inspiration for Doubt was his observation of how automatically Congress and Americans fell into lockstep with the push to invade Iraq. As such, it seems largely about the pitfalls of making hard distinctions about matters better served by critical probity and sober questions, the pro-active uses of skepticism, the dangers of drawing conclusions based on instinctive certitude without clear evidence, the inevitability of change and what happens when those lines blur and butt up against each other.

Without even reading your links, Inla, this is clearly the best post I've read about what Doubt is all about. Sorry I missed it earlier.

This is such a multileveled film, I can only beg everyone to see it. And more than once! I know this is one movie I'm going to eventually own.
Marj, you and me both, and you're too sweet to even note my verbiage, since I thought this

But if you see this film for what it's really about, you'll see it's about Spoiler: power, lack of certainty and clearly, doubt. The mystery of did he or didn't he is only the tipping point for all of this. End Spoiler. Indeed, watching closely, you'll see that Sister Aloysius's cross slowly becomes smaller and smaller as the film progresses.

the most succinct post about what Doubt is about that deserved a shout-out.

A propos of that, spoke to the Singing Dancing Therapist last night, who revealed that she went for Streep on her (already mailed) SAG ballot, also Langella, so, if it's Meryl and Frank at the SAGGYS, I'll know who tipped the vote, tee-hee. Also, she confirmed the shrinking cross conundrum, via her screener DVD. God is in the details.

Why would that make you a bitch? I don't understand. She certainly is divine -- Heavenly Creatures, Sense and Sensibility, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Little Children, I rest her case -- and obviously overdue.

Oh, I see, it was a tongue-in-cheek statement. Well, that's very different.

Never mind.
