You can buy "Robinson Crusoe" cheap on amazon.com . I know this is hard for you gromit...but the movie is out there. I did a search on amazon.com this a.m. and discovered a number of Bunuel titles available. Even a 2 movie box set.

I haven't checked, but I wouldn't be suprised if there's some Bunuel on YouTube for Joe to see.

Thanks Mo. I have so many unwatched Dvd's that I can wait. Glad to know it's out there on Dvd. Seems there's both a US and UK edition of RC -- both put out in 2007. Should turn up after a while.

I wouldn't know they were Bunuels by the covers.

For the UK, Bunuel's Crusoe is packaged with two other adventure films:

Los Olvidados appears to have a Spanish, French and Mexican edition. With an unidentified US distributor scheduled to join the fray.

That's VICTOR MATURE in Edgar G. Ulmer's "Hannibal" on the cover, btw. That U.K. DVD of "Robinson Crusoe" looks like a little gem.

[edit -- now that gromit reports that this is a U.S. release, there's no excuse NOT to track it down.

"Hannibal" featured battle scenes with the largest no. of people ever, I think. Done for real before CGI.]

I've seen a number of them, since we studied Bunuel in film class. Give them a try.

I have seen and enjoyed most of Bunuel's 1960's and 1970's works, and consider that to be his best period, but I have also seen a few of his movies from 1930's, including some in which he had collaborated with Salvadore Dali.

David Bordwell's doing Hong Kong, and has reached Tsui Hark, where he starts:

Quote:

Tsui Hark is the mad genius of Hong Kong cinema. The problem comes with assigning proportions. 10 % mad, 90% genius? 50-50? 99 % mad, 1 % genius?

I'd say 80% madness, 20% genius. Hark can get arresting images, but my reaction to the films I've seen by him is generally, "What the hell was that?" [See my review of The Legend of Zu in the film review archive.

I didn't really realize he'd produced Iron Monkey, which, unlike his own films, is mostly comprehensible. It also has classic martial arts and some really nicely done images.

Joe,
Bunuel's "L'Age d'Or" is on YouTube plus quite a bit of other stuff.

Mo, I was mega-tasking and got it wrong about those Rob Crusoe covers/editions. That three disc adventure set is a US release. And the standalone Crusoe was released in the US in 2005 and the UK in 2007.

Now there's no excuse not to watch Bunuel's "R. Crusoe" _or_ Ulmer's "Hannibal!"

BTW, that's the reason I'm not a huge fan of multi-tasking. Mega-tasking? Geez Luiz. Shocked

I thought that Robinson Crusoe cover looked vaguely familiar. Went to a shop with a good selection and found a slightly scuffed up cheap DVd5 copy of the 2004 US release.

If you look carefully you can see Luis Bunuel faintly written above the title in slim white lettering. When you're flipping through a thousand dvd's in 20 minutes it's easy to miss things like that. This was around for the past two years and I never noticed that it was a Bunuel film due to the ultra-cheesy cover. I'm lucky it was still kicking around.

What an overlooked film. When it was in the theatres I had no interest. When I saw it on dvd I couldn't believe what I had missed. A film with genuine suspense, genuine humanity.

I can't quite join the hosanna-shouting for Leo and Frozen River. It's a very, very fine movie without being remotely "great" IMO. As potentially overlooked movies that broke out go, The Visitor rates the "amazing" comments.
