On the genre, I stand corrected. Maybe a sisterhood movie with a helping of rom/com on the side. I wondered for a moment if Kendrick's love interest, Skylar Astin, was a descendant of John Astin but didn't see a resemblance and then his bio says nee Lipstein. Loved the cup solo. The ten-gallon vomitings not so much. As with Bridesmaids, I just don't see how these grotesque bodily purgings are necessary in any film. ("The Meaning of Life" excepted...) Of course, removing the vomit would mean you couldn't get the shot of the Asian girl ("In the womb, I ate my twin") doing snow angels in the puddle.

Re: Marc's comment about Flight, here is another view that is almost the same. It's by Andrew O'Hehir of Salon.

Slowly but surely Flight degenerates from a tale of moral paradox and wounded romance into a mid-1990's after-school special about addiction and recovery.

Not for me!

Hey, Bart, why aren't you seeing Seven Psychopaths????

My speculation was off; Frankenweenie did survive its expansion to a full-length movie. The key was when we get to experience the other kids' science projects, which get increasingly alarming. Martin Landau gets to reanimate Vincent Price. Pretty good, fun film without being great.

Next year looks like it will be a good year for animation.

It (or "they") left town. Might have to WFV, which was not my intention.

Has anyone seen Berberian Sound Studio?

I keep hearing good things about it, but have no idea what it is about.

So should I see Wreck-It Ralph or The Man with the Iron Fists?

I was hoping you would tell me. I'm not much for animation, but Frankenweenie sounds pretty good.

Berberian Sound Studio is about a sound studio insulated with attractive and stain-resistant carpet.

Never heard of this movie, but it sounds really scary.

Actually, I think animation is entering a more sterile phase and has become over-reliant on the quirky. The great traditional, musical-based Disney cartoons are now a think of the past. They were largely superseded on two fronts: Dreamworks and others went down a road of almost anti-Disney, somewhat cynical, wisecracking cgi films - at their best in the first Shrek and Over The Hedge; Pixar, in contrast, astounded in their consistent brilliance. During the nineties nd noughties, Pixar's were some of the best films made in any genre .

Being partially a reaction to Disney (and in some ways antithetical to the true strength of cartoon - emotion) the Shrek-style movies had a built-in obsolescence. And, inevitably, Pixar's work has dipped in quality. Toy Story III represented the closing of a book. Aardman are struggling to rise above the charm of their claymation and folksy English humour. Hayao Miyazaki has retired and, although Arrietty was one of the best films of last year, it is doubtful whether Studio Ghibli will maintain a strong presence in the American conciousness.

I am not saying there are not lots of good cartoons to come, it's just that I feel we have lived through a once in generation golden era.

Or maybe its because my daughters are just about all growed-up.

The Man with the Iron Fists: sometimes gonzo martial arts movies are fun, but then you get a film like this that is incompetently directed and edited with an incoherent story and visuals so muddy it's hard to tell what's going on. This is a Quentin Tarantino presentation, so damn him for that. One striking scene when the whores in a bordello strike out on their own, and Russell Crowe is bearable and probably needed a paycheck. Mostly the movie is simply annoying.

Now I know: if the director of a film is named RZA, run for the hills. 2 of 10.

Syd, very similar to the review in our newspaper. And she/he (I don't remember which), gave it a 1 out of five. Right on line with yours.

Overthinking the Movie Selection

Copain: It's like six movies crammed into one? Do we really want to see all of them?

Me: They're all connected by love, destiny, reincarnation, the ongoing human struggle! (sloshes coffee onto passing college student) Sorry.

Copain: Eww.

Me: Slopping the coffee?

Copain: No, what you just said. AYFKM? You hate shit like that.

Me: I do. And I'm getting a headache.

Copain: There's Arbitrage, over there.

Me: Started ten minutes ago. I don't partially view movies I paid full price for.

Copain: We should go to El Chaparro and get nachos.

Me: Yeah. Feed a headache, right? I'm going to miss Hugo Weaving, though.

Copain: Don't whine.

I know everyone here looks forward to my predictions. (A hush falls over the room).

After an initial strong week or two, the word will get out that Flight is a bummer and box office will fall off dramatically. It may break $100 million B.O. if it gets Oscar noms.

Cloud Atlas is the high-profile bomb of the year. Will crawl to $30 million B.O. max. I doubt that overseas B.O. will be any better than Stateside. It's hard to enough to follow even if you do speak English. Subtitles or dubbing won't help.

My favorite film of 2012, Holy Motors, will have to wait for release on DVD before it becomes the cult hit I predicted it would be in theaters. I can't understand why this amazing film can't find an audience. It has gotten a ton of good press.
