Gromit it is difficult watching The Avengers if you haven't seen most or all of the action heroes.

I just looked up Don't Look Now. I thought I might have seen it. I didn't, but I remember what I'd read about it when it was playing. Once I read the plot line I knew it wasn't for me and had no problem not seeing it because I hated it.

Just saw Looper. Had a good time watching it. I had the theatre all to myself. In the first part of the movie I had a bit of trouble figuring out exactly who was what or when in time they were, but it all gets clear as the movie goes along. Good Philip K Dick kind of SciFi. Lot of interesting mayhem.

Don't Look Now is wonderfully moody, but absolutely content free. Once you've had your "gottcha!" experience, there's nothing left.

2nd that - DLN is all about the mood, little girl in red coat in the fog, the traumatic power of memory....yeah, not much story. But I never felt the lack.

Jeremy - I'm glad you recognize the uses of hippie shit. Semiotic, good; prescriptive, bad.

Gary, glad you caught Looper. The ending is noble and quite strange - a whole future seems to be erased, but it is erased because that future did happen. Makes the brain ache.

I wonder how it holds up after all these years. I watched and re-watched Don't Look Now and The Man Who Fell to Earth in my teens, but suspect neither would do much for me now. They fit the hyper-emotionality of those years.

Always found The Man... very dull and blah, and I already weighed in on DLN.

Bart, yes it was a noble ending. This will be a spoiler, I'll white it out.

The future as we saw it is erased of course. The present will also be changed and develops into a different future. It's like quantum something-or-other. Smile

Hell, your brain should then ache thinking about how we got here. Or if we are even here. Razz

Has anyone seen, or heard of, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World? Another heavenly body invading the earth's space, giving rise to a quirky romantic comedy.
Steve Carell, Keira Knightley. Not exactly my faves, but you'd think such names would draw interest, buzz.
A Summer release that went under my radar,
Saw the Dvd the other day, think I'll give this a go.

IIRC, Grace saw it and liked it. For some reason, my initial dazzlement by Knightley faded. She started her career precociously, but then started to seem kind of one-note. And too much lip-biting.

EDIT: Here are Grace's comments, at the Elba website, back in June 2012...

I'm not saying this because I loved SAF, which is where we ended up for a couple of reasons; although the flick was better than I thought it would be. It's a total romcom, not one iota of sci-fi in it; but it's not necessarily a standard romcom. [Spoiler] The world ends, after all.[Spoiler] In some ways, a lot of the good stuff was in the trailer; if you want to see Patton Oswalt or Melanie Lynskey (or Connie Britton, lots of people love her), the trailer will do. But Carell and Knightley work well together (and I'm not a KK fan at all), and there's a great -- okay, it's probably merely really good, but I liked it -- scene with William Petersen as someone the main characters meet on their journey. There's the occasional contrivance, ie they flee their apartment building because of rampant rioting in the streets; yet much later on, the apartments are pretty much intact, building still standing and apparently not looted. A big glitch for some - noticed, but forgiven by me. There were also some pretty funny lines/scenarios; definitely a mixed bag. Overall, SAF didn't leave me kicking myself for wasting 1:45 of my life (which kind of surprised me). This doesn't mean I'd try to twist anyone's arm to see it; like I said, I just liked it better than I thought I would. And I'd probably see it once again on video, without waiting a little longer....

Safety Not Guaranteed

The Art of Getting By

Any ideas on those two films?
Small indie/Sundance/quirky kind of films.

My film copain and I both loved Safety Not Guaranteed. Everything indie film should be. Funny, inventive, and...well, without spoilering, I'll just say it keeps a pleasing ambiguity going as to what might happen. Charming film.

I long ago cited SNG as one of best movies of 2012. Too bad no one reads my posts. (sniff, gulp, sob)

Safety sounds safe then.
I usually prefer the smaller indie films to the big releases.
And they are easier to miss.
I like quirky if done well.

Feel free to post your 2012 list now and then.
That goes for everyone.

I have so little on mine so far, it's probably not worth it.

Best:
1. Margaret
2. The Turin Horse (Bela Tarr)
3. Moonrise Kingdom

Average -- not bad, but flawed:
7. The Deep Blue Sea
8. Kinyarwanda
9. Jeff, Who Lives at Home

Bad:
11. Cosmopolis

Saw it partly on the strength of your review here. Weep no more.
