Joe, I have never bothered with Netflix or any other of those companies. We have a very expansive video store here so if I want to see something I go there and pick it up. I don't know why anyone is criticizing you about your quitting Netflix. I read your connection to the avclub article. Sounded like a reasonable reason to quit Netflix. |

I thought Joe was just quitting the streaming service. |

The streaming service seems to be the one that Netflix has screwed up for its users, but I'm not one to know because I never used it or any other one. |

Joe,
linking to a two year old article doesn't impress me or refute my argument that there's plenty of worthwhile movies on Netflix if you're interested in indie, foreign or arthouse fare. But you're just a provincial square who doesn't seem to be able to wander far from home. |

Anybody notice that Netflix got 14 Emmy noms for their original streaming shows? |

I'm waiting for them to stop recommending food documentaries after "Kings of Pastry." |

In fact what kept me from cancelling sooner was the new season of Arrested Development. Which I more or less loved as much as the original series, probably more than I loved Season Three.
But here's the thing: I don't want more t.v. shows to watch. I just want to be able to access the few movies I want to see at a reasonable price. This is what it all boils down to. Used to be, you waited a few months at most, and everything showed up at your video store. You can still wait a few months and have everything show up on DVD at Netflix (I'm certainly not knocking their selection there). But you can wait and wait and wait and wait for a lot of stuff to show up on Netflix streaming. It's just not worth the cost to me.
Right now, Hulu sounds like the better investment, but even there just not sure I need more viewing material in my life. |

I tried Hulu Plus for a while. It's a far less economic investment than Netflix, and no more useful in terms of movies. They have more art films and a lot more soft-core porn, but no more first-run films or even second-run. Skip Hulu by all means. |

I'm using it to watch tv shows and old movies such as films in the Criterion Collection. No service is adequate if you're looking to stream a particular none-classic release; you're better off getting the disc mailing service from Netflix. And none will stream or mail you Lili. |

I find I watch more Netflix streaming than the discs. But I seem to gravitate toward tv shows that I don't get since I don't have cable or satellite.
Recently watched:
On disc........Californication and Nurse Jackie
Streaming.......The Killing, Spiral, The Top of the Lake
I highly recommend all of these. |

Yesterday I decided to go to a movie. I decided to go see Pacific Rim. Our local critic gave it a very bad rating but Imdb and Metacritic gave it an OK rating.
It had some good scenes. Massive robot machines and massive evil monsters. A number of battles which were longer as they went along. A lot of impressive destruction. The acting was OK. The best was Rinko Kikuchi who plays a Japanese woman and whoever plays her as a child in flashbacks is excellent. Ron Perlman who has a very small role is also a breath of fresh air.
Once again a movie is longer than it should be. I liked it enough. Good enough so I didn't have to squirm in my seat. I'd give it 6 1/2 out of 10. |

The first two seasons of Lost Girl are also available. |

This is hilarious from the guy who told me to open my mind to new experiences. What? Not enough blockbusters, past in present? Just more art films? How unworthy of your time.
Seriously Billy, will you look at what you're saying? Actually, the selection of recent blockbusters on Netflix is pretty poor (I think they just recently got Captain America). Plus, the great t.v. series Netflix used to make available streaming (and now doesn't) are available on Hulu. |

Joe, I didn't make it cleear that I meant really new films, which is what I expected (perhaps unrealistically) from Hulu Plus. Also expected more of a selection of Criterion classics. |
