the fact that it wasn't "mind filling".
Pauline Kael would be envious of this profundity. |

| In addition, Grand Canyon has a lovely title with a sweetly subtle and telling double meaning. |

Fight Club most definitely holds up to repeated viewings, as I've viewed it repeatedly. One of the smartest, darkest films I've ever seen.
But for sheer, shiny filmmaking genius, I'll give my "Best Film Of The 90's" nod to Pulp Fiction. Sure it's a homage, but so what? I wasn't watching a fucking bibliogaphy, I was watching one the best-written, inventively edited and most entertaining films ever made. In the mere 12 years since Pulp Fiction's release, there have been more homages paid to it than it paid to others, bringing us to the point where the name "Tarantino-esque" has moved into popular film lexicon as an adjective.
I hear the name 'Tarantino' and my eyebrows go up in anticipation. It's that simple.
Some other faves from the 90's:
12 Monkeys - Ditto on the film's mind-bending brilliance and Pitt's annoying overacting. Willis can act!
Jerry Maguire - A timeless screenplay. Cruise can act!
Casino - Scorsese homages Scorsese, except he manages to make a better film than Goodfellas, the original.
The Fugitive - Perfect suspense thriller. |

Billy, the 'ugh' etc was refering to The Shawshank Redemption and you keep talking about Grand Canyon.
Jeremy, did you really mean Godfather III? I haven't seen it, but that would be the first I've read of anyone even liking it. |

| Yes. It was not a great film, it fell short of its illustrious predecessors in many ways, not least in the acting and twenty years of intervening innovation. However, I still love the almost operatic drama of it and the series. |

GIII isn't bad, but compared to its predecessors, it's awful. Some blame Sofia Coppola's performance (which is unfair), but I'd say it just runs out of steam after a promising beginning. The Vatican/John Paul I plot is compelling if you know about the P2 bank scandal, but it's all a bit obscure if you don't. Andy Garcia's dynamite, but there's not enough of him.
For years it was rumored that Coppola was making a GIII with Michael's son trying to "make his bones" and join his reluctant dad in the family business-- a plot that would have yielded a better film, I think |

| Sofia Coppola can't be blamed for what the film wasn't, it never quite matched its ambition, but her performance was so bad that on more than one occassion it yanked me right out of the film. I understand that Winona Ryder was originally lined up to play the part, but I can't remember why she did not go ahead with it. It hardly seems like the type of role, you'd pass on to make Alien IV or Mermaids. |

| I love the 90s -- just one year, 1997, was such a trove of film riches -- LA Confidential, Boogie Nights, The Apostle The Big Lebowski, Jackie Brown, Contact, and a bunch of others I can't list off the top of my head but I know if you click on that year in a film database you'll be amazed. |

| A great underrated film of the '90s: Peter Weir's FEARLESS. |

Fearless, one of the best of 1993 films. And you just hardly ever see Jeff Bridges be anything less than brilliant.
more 1997 greats:
The Game
Donnie Brasco
The Ice Storm
Gattacca |

| I'd go with all of those except The Game, which I thought was silly Hollywood hokum. I didn't really care whether Michael Douglas lived, died or incarcerated. Still don't come to that. |

| Let's replace it, then, with 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag. |

| A few more: Jerry Maguire, Aladdin, Bound, Crumb, Toy Story 2. I'd forgotten Aladdin was a 90s film. |
