Toy Story: Best film I've seen this year! In their own way, Buzz and Woody have become as rich and layered as any characters onscreen.

Ghost Writer: Good old fashioned mystery yarn with solid plot and acting. Roman Polanski at his semi-best.

The Karate Kid: Waitaminnut - the kid learns Kung-fu, not karate! But aside from that, and the fact that this remake is almost a karaoke clone of the original, both Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan are almost as charming as Macchio and Morita. They call it "Feel-good", not "Think-good" for a reason.

| Cyrus: Funny and very scary black comedy about a strange trio: a desperate middle aged divorced man, a fortyish beauty, and her weird and borderline psycho son, played brilliantly by John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, and Jonah Hill respectively. Someday the consistent greatness of Tomei's acting will finally silence the people who still rail against her Oscar win for My Cousin Vinny. Hill has a major career ahead of him. ***1/2 |

| Winter's Bone: Undeniably accurate depiction of hardscrabble Missouri life with a very realistic performance by Jennifer Lawrence. The movie lacks pulse and drive, however. **1/2 |

| The Back Up Plan is unseen by me and I hated it. The movie poster itself was enough for me to give it 1/2*. I plan to not see it again when I'm in Atlanta. |

| Splice ** 1/2. Intriguing ideas, with echoes of Frankenstein, Oedipus and Electra, two irresponsible parents who learn that no matter how cool it looks, it's not a good idea to give your child a scorpion's tail. Ultimately fails in execution. |
