"Well, that other 10% are pretty fucking cool. But really, good question. I can't stand it."
Same everywhere, I think. The demographics of this country tells the story -- three-quarters have no college education, at least half are fairly conservative regarding religion, a tiny minority reads books on a regular basis, a minority follow politics and actually vote, a minority understand basic science concepts (so crucial in making policy in a modern society), a minority fully support gay rights to the point of supporting marriage or legal civil contracts, etc.
And, the thing is, we can't all move to Arcata CA or Eugene OR. |

And the big question to me is WHY is it like this? |

Well, because America was founded by a bunch of conservative religious fanatics who have passed on the ideals that all a person needs to live a happy life is a job and a family, so the majority of us spend our lives working shitty, unfulfilling jobs to pay bills for unnecessary shit that we're taught we need and coming home to watch shitty television shows and advertising that support these bullshit ideals. (That, and we work on our yards. I can't count the amount of times I've heard someone ask "What'd you do this weekend?" only to get the reply "Oh, just worked on my yard a little bit." Of course, I can't hate. My honest reply to that same question would have to be "Got fucked up and cried a lot.") That's why depression is so prevalent. We're taught all of this from an early age, we spend decades working towards this and we finally acquire what we're taught will make us happy and we live out the rest of our lives wondering why we aren't happier. And now we're required to attend college in order to acquire any job that will make enough money to pay the bills for all this unneccessary shit that we're taught that we need. And what do they teach those of us lucky enough to go to college? That there's more out there than a shitty job, a family, and a yard. So that makes us even more depressed, because we're in America and America is still trying to pretend that we don't know this, so we're either forced to conform or kill ourselves. So where does that leave us as a society? Working on our yards or getting fucked up and crying a lot. And working. |

Discussion is interesting but has devolved from a Goodfellas-based discussion into Lobby fodder. Please continue there. Thanks! |

Yes, Gromit............The Killer's Kiss is next and The Killing. Thanks.
Shannon...........Agreed, that's a problem everywhere. I've always attributed it to the popularity of sports over culture and education. However, I do like to work in my yard. |

Saw Match Point the other night. I enjoyed it, but as with all Woody Allen movies that tell a story, sometimes it drags out more than it should.
Regardless of that, I thought the movie ended well and had a good level of suspense during the final 30 mins of the film.
As always, Scarlett was great.... and hot... crazy, but still hot. |

Well, we are in agreement with the lack of Brad Pitt's hotness.
There are hotter actresses than Scarlett. See, I can be versatile. |

Sketches of Frank Gehry.........Directed by Sidney Pollack
Being an architecture buff, I ate this up. And I like Gehry, having seen the Disney theatre in LA........I'm impressed by his originality and fearless creativity.
Gary, You might be interested in this. Gehry's a Canadian Jew who's first wife pussywhipped (his words) him into changing his name from Goldberg.
An interesting side note was his many years of therapy. The therapist said architects were coming to him after they'd heard that Gehry had become a great architect because of the therapy.
I liked watching him in his studio with his assistants making the models. And his sketches were very fetching. |

I knew that Betsy, except the pussy whipping and the name change. I like his stuff too.
It a rare occassion when an American can enlighten a Canadian about who is a Canadian and it's also rare when a gentile can enlighten a Jew about who is Jewish. But the pussy whipping into a name change was enlightening. |

When I was around 10 we used to save these cards that used to come in a bubble gum package. They were pictures of movie stars with little bios and the name of their latest picture. John Wayne's latest picture was listed as Jet Pilot. Well I waited to see when Jet Pilot would come out but it never did. Finally in 1957 it was released, but I don't think it ever came to Winnipeg.
I just finished watching it on AMC. Janet Leigh plays a Russian spy. A worse case of miscasting I can't imagine. This picture was in that wonderful catagory of, so bad that it's good. What a ridiculous movie. A lot of fun to watch. And Leigh looks fantastic. |
