The dictionary might state that envy and covet are synonyms, but I always took covet to be a little stronger, to indicate desire tinged with intent. You might as well try and stop your pupils dilating in the presence of beauty as stem envy. I tend agree with Lorne that envy is the engine of aspiration.

OK, I saw 49th Parallel on TV the other day (TCM). It's from 1941 and has a host of big names. It's about some Nazis who have escaped custody in Canada, where they were when their U Boat was sunk, captured, I don't know which. They end up in a Hutterite Colony for a while where they try to recruit the Hutterites (they are of German origin) to their Nazi ways. I've known many Hutterites and this is a good depiction of their life. Manitoba has a large Hutterite population, and that is where they are. And Glynis Johns is one of the Hutterites and I love her. When they have to leave the colony they go to Winnipeg. I loved the shots of Winnipeg. It was just how I remembered it. They even showed some of the popular cafes and restaurants of the time which I remember well and some are even still in business. From there they continue their trek west and end up in BC. meeting up with Leslie Howard who plays a writer who is living with and studying the BC Indians. Their ranks are thinning, they started with five and end up with one (the leader) who finds himself on a freight train with Ramond Massey, a reluctant soldier, heading for the States.
This movie is melodramatic and obviously a picture to bolster the population's support for the war against the nazis, but it is a good movie and it produces a great sense of tension throughout. The scenery is also spectacular. It could well be a travelogue of Canada from it's eastern extreme to it's western Pacific coast.
I missed the first few minutes of the film and tuned in just before they shoot some Eskimos in what I imagine is Labrador. I think their boat was sunk of the Maritimes. |
