Envy v.t. To regard with envy: to feel jealous of; to covet

Argue with the dictionary. I'll take their definition.

Fuck Mirriam and fuck Webster. Here's my definition:

"Envy" is the genesis of "Aspire".

"Jealous" is the genesis of "Take".

I don't use those dictionaries. Mine is The Concise English Dictionary. It is British. Why would I use a dictionary from the colonies.

Actually, I found Merriam and Webster to be difficult company. I couldn't get a word in edgewise.

Thall shalt not covet your neighbour's wife or his ass or his wife's ass.

The dictionary might state that envy and covet are synonyms, but I always took covet to be a little stronger, to indicate desire tinged with intent. You might as well try and stop your pupils dilating in the presence of beauty as stem envy. I tend agree with Lorne that envy is the engine of aspiration.

Quote:
Envy and jealousy are very close in meaning. Envy denotes a longing to possess something awarded to or achieved by another: to feel envy when a friend inherits a fortune. Jealousy, on the other hand, denotes a feeling of resentment that another has gained something that one more rightfully deserves: to feel jealousy when a co-worker receives a promotion. Jealousy also refers to anguish caused by fear of unfaithfulness.

Covet shmovet, you don't fuck your neighbour's wife or his ass. That's where that taboo regarding homosexuality started in the Bible. Damn those Israelites!

No, Lorne's a comedian with a natch for witty posts.

Nope. The word I was looking for (but couldn't think of it at the time) was knack.

That's what happens when you view too many hip web sites before typing out a response to a post.

OK, I saw 49th Parallel on TV the other day (TCM). It's from 1941 and has a host of big names. It's about some Nazis who have escaped custody in Canada, where they were when their U Boat was sunk, captured, I don't know which. They end up in a Hutterite Colony for a while where they try to recruit the Hutterites (they are of German origin) to their Nazi ways. I've known many Hutterites and this is a good depiction of their life. Manitoba has a large Hutterite population, and that is where they are. And Glynis Johns is one of the Hutterites and I love her. When they have to leave the colony they go to Winnipeg. I loved the shots of Winnipeg. It was just how I remembered it. They even showed some of the popular cafes and restaurants of the time which I remember well and some are even still in business. From there they continue their trek west and end up in BC. meeting up with Leslie Howard who plays a writer who is living with and studying the BC Indians. Their ranks are thinning, they started with five and end up with one (the leader) who finds himself on a freight train with Ramond Massey, a reluctant soldier, heading for the States.

This movie is melodramatic and obviously a picture to bolster the population's support for the war against the nazis, but it is a good movie and it produces a great sense of tension throughout. The scenery is also spectacular. It could well be a travelogue of Canada from it's eastern extreme to it's western Pacific coast.

I missed the first few minutes of the film and tuned in just before they shoot some Eskimos in what I imagine is Labrador. I think their boat was sunk of the Maritimes.
