| I don't want to put words in Befade's mouth, but mayber, for all its superficial grossness and hard to stand comedy of embarassment, she was taken by its incision...and Sacha Baron Coen in a green swimsuit. |

Now you can avoid a jeremyriad of neologisms and protologisms such as "mayber" by simply downloading and utilizing Firefox 2.0
Yes, Firefox 2.0 spell-checks the garbled words your poor tired fingers type into open fields on any webpage.

Yes, Jeremy I think that's it. Borat and his incision. (What incision by the way?)
Bart.........Are you a Borat doppelganger (barto)? You seem to have a deep understanding of his nature. |

Last night I needed a relief from the multiple genitalia sightings in Shortbus. So I chose one of my favorite Joan Crawford films......Female on the Beach (everyone had clothes on......and by the way what was sexy about Joan Crawford?)
There was an older con artist couple in the film pretending to be Jeff Chandler's aunt and uncle. They reminded me of the older couple in Mulholland Drive who befriend Naomi Watt's character. To a T. I wonder if Lynch likes old Joan Crawford movies? I wonder if Mo knows what architect build the beach house.
One big disappointment. I was watching a VHS tape I made from AMC years back and there's the sound of static throughout. This film has not been made into a DVD. What can I do to replace my copy? |

Befade, I liked Borat, but I'm actually fairly refined in person. Some men will speak openly about their bodily functions, speaking of taking a "whiz" or "dump" or similar. I generally just ask where the bathroom is, and leave open what my plans are when I get there. Maybe I'm just freshening up. I like to leave them guessing.
"Stranger than Fiction" was one of the better surreal/bent real films that have come out lately. Maggie G. drove yet another dart into my heart, immediately rendering the thought of any alternate casting impossible. Will Ferrel managed to be fairly soulful, which is a fine leap forward for someone so closely identified with broad comedy. The film, as a whole, doesn't strain to be anything more than it is, playful with the goofy philosophy and pretensions of literary analysis, letting the VO writer deploy cliches (Ferrell decides to "live" and take up...the guitar!) with a wink and a nudge. I had a feeling I hadn't had for a while with a mainstream film: I was having fun. |

Re: FEMALE ON THE BEACH. I see it's a Universal release from 1955. I suspected that the art director was the famous Alexander Golitzen. Indeed it was - co-credited with Robert Clatworth.
Not having seen the movie, I would guess that the beach house is a combination of set, rear projection, and possibly location (the imdb.com lists Calif. as the location - big help!).
Gut feeling - I suspect that the set was designed by Golitzen (or at least he supervised).
When I have time, I've got to Google Golitzen as I'm pretty sure he's in some books on art direction.
Now I'm intrigued. Wonder where I can find this movie. What is the house like? 50's modern or traditional? |

She was rather attractive in Grand Hotel (and funny which helps). I saw her in a later film with Fred McMurray (Above Suspicion) and she was already a little scary when she was supposed to be amusing. I think someone had told her she was an ACTRESS in between. |

Bart,
I think you nicely summed up the appeal of Stranger Than Fiction , which was one of my favouite films of last year. |

The buzz about Crawford was that she slept with all of her directors. Yes, even the young Steven Spielberg when he directed a "Night Gallery."
Really.

| Bart - Glad you enjoyed Stranger Than Fiction. In addition to the things you mentioned, I admired Dustin Hoffman's performance as the literature professor who is surprisingly quick to accept the idea that Mr Crick is a character in a story and not just some loon who wandered into his office. In a way, the movie pivots on that moment. If he hadn't taken Crick seriously then the story would have gone in a completely different direction from that point and not been half as charming. |

Earl,
You are right about the meeting betwen Ferrell and Hoffman being a pivotal point in the film; from that moment we knew we were in a fairy tale and were not going to be wrung through an emotional mangle. |

I'm watching Forbidden Quest, have come to the "impossible" sexual position, and, speaking from my vast lack of experience with the Kama Sutra, I have to conclude that, unless the man has had many years of yoga to loosen his muscles, he will pull a groin muscle as well as not being able to get leverege for thrusting. In other words, I'm on the side of the illustrator.
This obviously is a critical subject for discussion, so you all need to rent this film and weigh in with your opinions. And make sure you're up on your yoga before testing it. Viewers under 18 are exempt from the discussion although they may be the only ones flexible enough to test the subject matter. |
