Thanks
It sounds like it might be your player - maybe you should have a repair shop check before you buy a new one. Is it freezing on disks you've had for awhile and played before with no problem?
Mine (Jaton) is 3-4 years old now, and has done quite well. I think it's only choked on two DVDs in that time, both "homemade." (I've played a lot more "homemade" than that.)
If you decide to go with a new one, that will depend on what you want the machine to do. If you want a good machine that can handle multiple regions and HDTV, and you aren't adverse to spending a little money (not the most expensive, but not cheap either), you can try http://www.oppodigital.com/. I got one for my sister / b-in-law for Xmas, based on several recommendations, and they're quite happy with it.
I actually have a response to the "miracle negro" thing open in another window... |

THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY - Dramatization of the Irish guerrilla war for independence, and the subsequent civil war (1919 - '22). Its setting forth of a complicated political situation is excellent. Its portrayal of the thuggish Black and Tans is right on. Cillian Murphy fans (and I'm one) will not be disappointed. No cutesy Irish stereotypes here.
My Comcast On Demand gave me this, while Netflix has an unknown release date. |

| There really aren't many places that repair dvd players. Cheap players are intended to be replaced. The labor to repair an inexpensive dvd player is more than the cost of the player itself. |

Roderick - my trip to your fair climes seems to have been moved to December. Well, whenever these people get it together (and they've actually been married for about 7 years, they're just letting others in on the secret), I will be there.
I have strange friends. |

It may fix the problem. Sony's make good dvd players that can last years.
Don't pay more than $10 for the lens cleaner. |

| When my first dvd player was having problems, I tried a lens cleaner and got an extra 2 years out of it with no problems. Actually it still works, but I use my spiffy new one instead. |

| it seems to me that "couch with a view" is exactly the correct forum in which to discuss home viewing technology. |

| I've had WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY in my store for the past two months (UK import) but I haven't watched it yet. I find Ken Loach films boring. |

I'd prefer it in the Lobby, but things spring up where they spring up.
As for The Wind That Shakes the Barley, I thought it was powerful in places, but mostly seemed rather conventional in its storytelling. There's also a certain odd awkwardness to some of Loach's style. And the politics of the situation can get a little complicated at times. I liked it, but was left somewhat dissatisfied.
Somewhat related, I was reading an Irish novel (The Emperor of Ice Cream) set during WWII last month, and was pretty surprised to find that the main character's father and some other Irish were rooting for Hitler in a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" way. Even some people leaving lights on purposely hoping to guide in German planes during blackouts/airraids. It's a later time than the film, but gets at the heart of Irish desperation and rebellion, along with British colonialism and oppression. |

I find discussions of home viewing technology as boring as Marc finds discussions of American Idol or crossword puzzles. |

| Gromit, it was no secret that the Irish rebels were supporting the Nazis. And in recent years the IRA was in league with middle east terrorists, weapons and training alliances. |

billy, home viewing technology is related to the watching of movies. And Lady, Gromit and I were talking to befade, not you. |
