Why don't you do a quick count,  and see how many women comment on how some actor is hot or gorgeous or sexy etc. and how many times the men on here comment about an actresses looks. Actually the ones I remember are usually extolling the looks of actresses I find unattractive and skinny, plus being mediorce in their profession. Jolie, Kidman, Knightley (decent actress but no bombshell). Maybe women just have better taste in hottie actors than men have in actresses.
Where are the Ava Gardners, Janet Leighs, Joan Colllnses, Jean Simmons', Claire Blooms, Kim Novaks, Marilyn Monroes, Hedy Lamars, Vivian Leighs? Women. Not skinny girls.
I concede, there are more hot actors (men) than there are hot actresses (women).
Gary as far as I'm concerned, the stars of today will NEVER compare to the ones you mention NEVER.
One guy I don't mind in character roles w/ extra poundage and the beard, etc. is Geo. Clooney. He can eat all the crackers in bed he wants. Also Wm. Petersen who tends to spend a bit too much time hanging out at the donut table.

Several of the femmes Gary mentions were mediocre to terrible actresses. Methinks he's letting nostalgia rule. |

Yeah, but Joan Collins *is* the object of one of the best comeuppances in movie history (that ode to historical inaccuracy, Land of the Pharaohs - and we're back to Howard Hawks again...)
So there is a just ending sometimes. %^D |

I did searches on most of the international amazon(s). The French amazon.fr.co has so many Hawks's films it's unbelievable...but then not if you know the French.
And yes, I was surprised to see several different editions of "Land of the Pharoahs" at the French site.
I haven't seen the film recently...but would certainly be up for it. I don't believe it's all that bad frankly. |

| Finally caught up with Tropic Thunder. It's exhausting and over-caffeinated. Tom Cruise is amusing because he's Tom Cruise saying "fuck" over and over again. This should not be confused with being really funny, however. The rest of the movie features very talented people being misused. |

| Tropic Thunder had its moments, and yes, Tom in a fat suit dancing to Ludicris was not particularly funny, but it was jaw droppingly entertaining; fair play to the twat. That said, I am a bit of a loss to understand how this unsubtle satire came to be voted best comedy at the recent critics' awards (not sure which critics' awards - I lose track at this time of year). A testament to star power and Hollywood insularity perhaps or just a dearth of competition. Time for a new Simon Pegg movie. |

The earth stood still and Keannu Reeves didn't do much either.
On a couple of occassions in the past, I have unfairly labelled Kiera Knightley, Ikea, when all the time, Keannu provided a much better fit. Ikeannu, along with Nicole Kindling, are now at the top of my wood-themed joke list.
The Day The Earth Stood Still is perhaps the final evidence needed to answer the question: will Keannu Reeves will ever grow up to be a proper actor.
Shame, the idea of updating of the fifties cold war. alien paranoia film to address modern environmental concerns was worth developing.
Talking about sawing off a piece of a performance and fasioning it into an award, I haven't seen it, but I am told that Bride Wars is so bad that Anne Hathaway should be awarded negative votes in her quest for a Rachel Getting Married Oscar. Poor old Kate Hudson, even though she has resorted to producing herself, she still can't manage to be anything good? |

| After seeing it, I too couldn't understand how Tropic Thunder won that award (the Broadcast Film Critics award, FYI). Though (that said) I was happy for Ben Stiller. I think the Downey connection helped the movie gain a "prestige" factor, not to mention that the reviews, which I've been reading with my jaw on the floor, were pretty much great. |
