THE INFORMANT.

I don't think I've seen that movie before. Will have to add that to my Netflix list.

It hasn't come out yet. He didn't look so hot in "The Talented Mr. Ripley." I had a friend say she'd never go to a Matt Damon movie again after she saw him in that.

Marc was less than complimentary about PSH. Someone could probably find the post in our Archives. Marc was acquainted with him from his NYC days.

Tropic Thunder had its moments, and yes, Tom in a fat suit dancing to Ludicris was not particularly funny, but it was jaw droppingly entertaining; fair play to the twat. That said, I am a bit of a loss to understand how this unsubtle satire came to be voted best comedy at the recent critics' awards (not sure which critics' awards - I lose track at this time of year). A testament to star power and Hollywood insularity perhaps or pehaps a dearth of competition. Time for a new Simon Pegg movie.

It's the closest to Oscar Tom should ever come, however.

I haven't seen it, but I am told that Bride Wars is so bad that Anne Hathaway should be awarded negative votes in her quest for a Rachel Getting Married Oscar.

In other words, will Bride Wars be to Hathway what Norbit was to Eddie Murphy?

For what it's worth, Peter Travers says it won't be:

"Hathaway has this bottomfeeder playing while Academy voters are considering her great performance in Rachel Getting Married for a Best Actress Oscar. Let me say that Hathaway doesn't dishonor herself the way Eddie Murphy did when the opening of the repulsive Norbit shut down his chances at Oscar gold for Dreamgirls."

I haven't seen Hathaway in anything lately...but IMO she milked the business with the crooked fiance for maximum press. I have read numerous articles about this and Hathaway. She's made it a point to hit the red carpet frequently and look very glamorous. Her handlers are doing good work for her.

Now if those handlers could keep her clear of Kate Hudson vehicles. Except for Almost Famous, Kate's presence is a guarantee that the film is going to be terrible.

IMO, and I realize I'm probably in a minority about this, Kate Hudson was not even any good in Almost Famous, her "career breakthrough" and first and only Oscar nomination. She was ever-so-slightly better in The Skeleton Key, but she'll never be anything to me except Goldie Hawn's daughter who was carried in on mom's coattails.

She's really pretty mediocre in Almost Famous, but hadn't yet turned into the black hole that absorbs all talent in its vicinity. Too bad for Hathaway, who I generally like.

I forgot about Joan Collins. Will have to agree with Rod about this pick!!

She's a "bad movie we love" all by herself.

Wink

I wasn't judging them by their acting ability, but by their looks. They were beautiful women, not like the cute cheerleaders that seem to be considered the Hollywood beauties of today.

The other night I was trying to remember one film in which Kate Hudson scored. Obviously, I see few of her movies, but I couldn't think of one. So thanks for reminding me of The Skeleton Key. I did like that film. But considering her output, this is a sad statement.

WOW.

First off, I absolutely devour every PSH performance -- his real-life acts be damned (if need be).

Secondly, Penny Lane was sublime to me.

Thirdly, Anne Hathaway? Really?? Really.

First off, word. He's quite something in Uncertainty, meeting Mrs. Gummer at her most ruthless and intractable beat for beat. Am sorry that I haven't yet seen the Kaufman whangdoodle (the reason, according to more than one member, that WALL-E wound up taking the L.A. Film Critics top prize, because none of the other Big Ticket mainstreamers than Noir Sir got anything like a plurality of votes, and Schenectady, Nuevo Jork was a spoiler among the more adventurous crix.)

Secondly, I don't know that Penny Lane in Nearly Celebrated was what I'd call a great acting performance, but word, again, totally understood what the kid saw in her, and I'm a poofter, but still.

Thirdly, Wordly. The grown-up potential that La Belle Anne showed in Brokemount Backtain comes to fruition and then some, worthy of Godard or Cassavetes or even just Demme. Still one of my favorite turns of last year. Not for nothing did she tie with her former Prada nemesis at the Broadcast Film Critics awards the other night, and pretty darned adorable about it she was.

Bride Wars is going to go buh-bye soon enough, though it may well clean up in the hinterlands on Bargain Bin DeeVeeDee, but I doubt it; whereas Jacob'sInamorata Becoming Espoused will stand out for decades, inequities and idiosyncrasies and all. A remarkable fillum.

Poor old Kate Hudson, even though she has resorted to producing herself, she still can't manage to be anything good?

Every time I see the commercials for BRIDE WARS, I wonder about the timing of when she signed on to do that movie vs. when she did RACHEL GETTING MARRIED.

Of course, Kate's excuse... well, she doesn't really have one. With the exception of ALMOST FAMOUS and THE SKELETON KEY, I've yet to see her do a movie that hasn't stereotyped herself into "me too" roles in shameless movies.

You are in the minority with those two movies, but I agree with your ending statement, as evidenced by every other movie she's been in.

I thought he looked good for the role in "The Talented Mr. Ripely" He wasn't supposed to be in the best shape (at least I didn't think so) due to his sinister role he played.
