I've lost track; is this the right forum for the SJH thread. Regardless, here is an interview in the Guardian where he talks about his 'craft'.

Because of its upbeat ending and vibrancy, I have read many articles where commentators erroneously describe Slumdog Milliionaire as a 'feel good'. It is no more an ewasy watch than Danny Boyle's other under-the-radar, take-your medicine-with-a-spoonful-of-sugar, bravura tour-de-force, Trainspotting.

On the radio on Friday, I heard one tongue-tied critic use the malapropism, 'feel dog', to describe the film, which somehow felt more right.

Who'd have thought that the HFPA would buck the trend in a way that would get us cheering. Maybe we can agree to forget about Pia Zadora now.

I'm very pleased for Kate Winslett, an actress in her prime, but suspect she will be disappointed at the Oscars. Her wince inducing acceptance speech won't have helped, though perhaps, given how long she's had to wait and the ready availability of flute laden trays of champagne, she can be forgiven. Ms Winslett has never been one for displaying the same sang froid as her fellow countrywomen, Emma Thompson and Kristin Scott Thomas.

At least Kiss Me Kate will now get to have her picks of the frocks and rocks for the big night.

If anyone had told me a year ago that I would ever be actively rooting for and over the moon about a performance by Colin Farrell I would have laughed in their face. Farrell was one of my least favorite actors on the planet. But he turned me around with his great acting in In Bruges and has made me once again aware of the power of sobriety. Not by accident did he allude last night to the fact he no longer does cocaine--nor booze nor any other substance by fairly common knowledge. Farrell clearly had the talent but was squandering it. Long may you wave, sir, cleanly and soberly!

Bugger! I'm not quite sure how Phillip Seymour Hoffman metamorphosed into SJH.

Pretty much my view as well.

This was a night that topped any Oscar ceremony I can remember.

For its sheer lack of big boring production numbers, the Globes ALWAYS top the Oscars.

That being said, can't wait till the Oscars!

Years ago, the BAFTA's used to have a dinner based evening much like The Globes. However, these days they've opted for a hibrid, held in a theatre, but without the show elements.

This was fine when the estimable Stephen Fry hosted, but now that he's reserving his loquacious wit to other uses, the evening is much less satisfying. The current host, Johnathan Ross is sharp and funny, but his humour is often too 'in' and risque, and his appeal less broad, especially for vistors from overseas.

Thank you billy for speliing all these proper names correctly! That's "Colin," 1 'l'; "Farrell" - 2 'r's and 2 'l's; and "Bruges" with an 's,' thankee.

Very Happy

Glad to be of service. Plus, my adrenaline starts racing when I see words and names misspelled. Seriously, no joke.

Of course, I have a tendency to exaggerate as well. It's not as dire as I made out. But I do laser in on typos with more than ordinary zeal.

Mrs. Mendes is definitely a Player in the Big Gold Bald Man With Sword derby, though that second acceptance speech was more than a little over-the-top, as opposed to, say, Sally Forth Hawkins' touchingly nerve-wracked sincerity. Remain convinced that, subconsciously at least, what really drives the AMPAsites, besides dollar figures, is "What would it look like if....was on the Worldwide, Overblown-In-Import Podium?" hence Jim Carrey's failure to nab a nod for Truman Show. It all depends on the nom spread, because if they have a chance to give Her Katetitude Supphose, they will, but they won't give her both awards. Depends also on whether Kristin Classiest is in the mix, because Mrs. Gummer and La Belle Anne are Mortal Locks for nods, and it looks like Sally Sweetest may sneak in there after all, though Mrs. Pitt is a force majeure in her own right.

Once more, with feeling: No matter how much fun the Let's Party Till It's 2099 show may be, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is artistically corrupt and journalistically negligible, and often vice-versa. When someone who merely pens a press release for a film's European haul-out can become a member through internecine connections, as has been the case on more than one occasion, the organization's cred is suspect.

Rourke could certainly steam ahead, even if the Comeback All Is Forgiven position only goes so far -- didn't take for Garland or Kirkland. In his case, it depends on what degree Penn and Langella continue to campaign, whether Mr. Jenkins, Leo and/or East Clintwood get in the final two slots, and how many GRAMPAS decide that The Wrestler isn't thinly veiled autobiographic with a masochistic twist once the thespians have weighed in with their nomination slate. Mickey made some very powerful people awfully unhappy with him for decades. Just saying. On the other hand, he thanked his dogs and Axl Rose, which has to count for something in canine-o-centric rockatonic TonsilTone. On the other other hand, he got bleeped a bit more than not, but that's the Globules for you. Nonetheless, if Mickey was a Lock before, he's now the Principal Threat to Harvey Sean MilkPenn.

It would take an Act of Congress for Colin Farrell to get a nod for In Bruges. Field's too crowded, for starters, and though he was remarkably good, it wasn't The Second Coming. That film's best Racso chance is original screenplay. It was a kewel upset, though, and he was relatively sweet.

Meanwhile, two awards can be taken to the bank already, Ledger for Supphose and WALL-E for Animated Feature. If either of them aren't the recipient on The Night, Streisand's nose will rhinoplast itself.

To forget history is to repeat it. Pia Zadora will live forever, though admittedly mainly for her Beatnik Chick in Hairspray. When she gets high. she is Odetta.

Oh, dear. Forgot all about Odetta.
Deep sigh.

Perhaps Baby Jen Hudson could play her, once the mourning period for her terrible personal tragedy has passed.

How fun it is to edit when one should be at odious play reviewing duties. And then, to edit some more. What a feeling of power.
