I really liked Adventureland. It really did deserve a wider audience. Here's hoping it does well on home video.
I'd actually say that romantic comedy is the successor to screwball. Something like noir being the successor to German expressionism (although the link is probably stronger with the comedies). And Trouble in Paradise is one of the bridges between the two (although I'd put it a little more in the romantic comedy camp).
But that's just me...
EDIT: and I just saw that Joe basically said all that - although I'd say The Philadelphia Story is screwball. |

I think Whiskey makes a good point. There certainly is a kind of guilty pleasure enjoyed by both Sleepless and YGM. I'm not sure why that is, but I do agree that it's true.
I could not wrap my brain around Defintely, Maybe. I'm not sure why. I may try again, someday. And since I haven't had lunch, it's lunchtime here as well. |

Joe, as soon as I finish some work and I can locate it, I'm going to send you the 1994 revival of Carousel. Then you can decide how good a singer Julie ought to be.
Btw, I finally found the Rebecca Kilgore CD so I'll send that too. |

| Interesting points all around. To me, screwball denotes a decidedly insane bent to characters, situations and/or tone, and am not sure that Philadelphia Story in either its stage or screen incarnations fully possesses that outside edge-- but it's certainly close to nutty. Screwmantic comeballdy, perhaps. |

I own it. The Billy on that recording is weaker. Jackman may be the best proposition for the role in decades. |

I would certainly agree that all the voices should be excellent. But of all the principals, I think Julie is in least dire need of a great singer. "What's the Use of Wond'rin'?" is almost a spoken song and "If I Loved You" can be carried by Billy if necessary. Just sayin'. |

I get your point. But as one who hits the sour notes regularly with "If I Loved You" at a piano bar, I insist the song is impossibly hard and no mere mortal is capable of rendering it justice.  |

What's the Use of Wond'rin' is often given to beginning singers as it goes right up the scale smoothly, right over one's break.
And I agree Billy. Billy could sing "If I Loved You," if necessary. (It really is a hard song.) But this is not just a song. It's a scene! And that would be a shame. I think Anne Hathaway can handle it. |

La Belle Anne hasn't been signed yet, but it gave me hope when the item appeared in the Envelope in, like, April or May, that Huge Ackman was negotiating with her for the role, having thought it an obvious choice since their joint appearance at the opening of the Racsocast. She has that little kid face that could stare up at him and break everyone's heart. As for being able to sing it, if she could handle Anna Maria Alberghetti's high notes -- which she did, beautifully, in the Carnival concert opposite Stokes -- she can handle Jan Clayton's high notes.
