Shutting out Selma is unforgivable. |

The Golden Globes are better tnan SAG. Who woulda thunk it? Selma, and David Oyelowo's performance in same, trump almost everything this year. Gotta give it up for Michael Keaton, just because, but Oyelowo is really astonishing. |

"Citizenfour" is the best documentary I have seen this year and it plays like a gripping thriller. Although we are familiar with much of the story of Edward Snowden's flight to Hong Kong and then to Russia with a mine of National Security Agency's top secrets, the footage gathered here and the editing bring us dramatically close to the actual course of events from the time Edward Snowden, Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras first came together to the time the story and the drama flashed on world's television screens and newspaper headlines. Enthralling! |

Anyone seen The Babbadook? An Australian indie that is getting raves. 96% positive at tomatoes.
Saw a solid, and heartfelt, Brit sci-fi about the first artificial intelligence, 2013 release, called simply The Machine. One of best small studio sci-fis seen in past couple years. |

I am in the very small minority that found Citizenfour to be a crashing bore. The director sets her camera down in a Hong Kong hotel room and photographs a conversation between Edward Snowden and Glenn Greenwald talking about stuff that you already know everything about if you haven't been vacationing on Venus for the past year or so. It's like a home movie. The only thing that I liked about the film was Snowden, whose personality alone makes it intermittently watchable. |

On the other hand, I am in league with A.O. Scott and Stephen Holden on the subject of Boyhood, which is my favorite movie of 2014, only rivaled by the overwhelming Selma. They are by light years my two favorite movies of the 2010 decade so far. Two of the most acclaimed movies of the year are two of my least favorite--the aforementioned (just above) Citizenfour and the endlessly twee The Grand Budaoest Hotel, about which the only good thing I can say is "it's better than The Life Acquatic with Steve Zissou." I'm also totally underwhelmed or worse by Ida.
Boyhood, Selma, Nightcrawler, Foxcatcher. I'm a one-word man.
Oops, there's also Men, Women & Children, which has been so universally panned that I almost forgot how much I admired it.
Best Actor is the most overcrowded field in years, and Best Actress the most sparsely filled. |

Quote: I’m still too freaked out to say much more about “The Babadook.” I don’t want to provoke the monster. And I’ll be looking forward to Jennifer Kent’s next movie. I’m already clearing out a hiding place under my bed.
A.O. Scott put the film on his top ten list. Boyhood was here the week we were fixing flash flood damage, iirc. Hope it streams soon. |

I agree with Billy about Ida. It was stodgy and contrived. I am surprised to see it on so many "Best" lists. |

She's a simple woman with an iron will, in a time and place that was more Catholic than any other save Ireland, and under oppression. That all gave it an added dimension for me without it being hardly expressed. And the suicide was anything but contrived. |

Bingo, I'm on. I guess have to write about some of the movies I've seen.
Just saw The Birdman. Very good and unusual. Keaton is very good and the rest of the cast are almost as good.
Nice to be back on here! |

Of course. Because I had a problem of getting into the site, Lorne helped me out and one of the things was to change my place on the Memberlist.
Can someone tell me how to change the colour of red to the colour of blue and filled the site, that I always liked much better? |
