Nowadays, he'd probably get off with an insanity plea. On both counts. |

Mitty,
Shucks! I thought it might take longer than that for someone to find the ultimate defense!
Very good!

Charles, I'm afraid I'm Lolita'd out. I don't have one more thing to offer. It's been a great run, and you deserve much of the credit. Thank you. |

To all:
I thought we might wrap up with a simple tribute to this masterpiece that has been the fire of our discussion for the past three weeks.
Memories
The question is simple.
What will be your main memory of Lolita?

For me, the book is one long giggle-- Nabokov's writing makes me laugh. |

My memory will be Nabokov's amazing writing, which combined satire, comedy and vivid story-telling into a work of genius.

And now it is only fair to announce that, when once the orb of the Sun makes a complete circuit of this planet Earth, to the total sounds of silence in this forum, then the Moderator will sing his Swan Song, pull down the curtain, and that will be it. So, last call!

Its difficult for me to put my finger on exactly what is most memorable for me. When I first read a novel I tend to engulf it, sensory perception and all that. This book was almost sensory overload! I feel that Humbert was a monster that repented in the end. I quote:
"When I started, fifty-six days ago, to write Lolita. first in the psychopathic ward for observation, and then in this well-heated, albeit tombal, seclusion, I thought I would use these notes in toto at my trial, to save not my head, of course, but my soul. In mid-composition, however, I realized that I could not parade living Lolita. I still may use parts of this memoir in hermetic sessions, but publication is to be deferred........................I wish this memoir to be published only when Lolita is no longer alive."
There was also a place where he realized that he had damaged Lolita, perhaps beyond repair. Nabokov put the kibosh on the reader ever knowing for sure the result of Humbert's interference in her life. I mean in the long run of course.
The book also made me realize the full extent of my own mother's protection of her only child.
I'm glad we read it. And discussed it so throughly. |

Mitty,
We're all here still.
I just thought I'd leave the mike open here for people to compose their thoughts without the moderator poking his nose in for once.
Feel free,

To all, and everyone:
The Sun has come around the Pole once again and the curtain comes down on this Forum.
I hope that everyone who has participated, from regulars to those who stepped in for just a moment, is basking in the well-deserved compliments that this Lolita Forum has attracted. Truly, without everyone's enthusiastic participation and willing contribution, this would not have been the glorious Forum that it has been. Sincerest thanks to all for that. Cheers!
On a personal note, I have to say that I have had a ball! This has been more fun than I could ever have imagined and, for that also, I thank you.
Perhaps, this New Year's Day, on her birthday, we might remember to have one additional toast, to the memory of that little girl who long ago started all this commotion.
Thanks everyone, for everything,
See you around,
Charles |
