Should I move this over to Crotch With A View?

I get what you are saying. Then what you need are the higher class films. With actresses like Jenna Jameson and ones where there is a build up to the story (well, not too long of a build-up).

Oh, I've got on to Jenna Jameson sites. Her movies are among the good ones. But even in some of the plotted variety the plots are so stupid and the acting is so bad that it can't help but be distracting. I guess I shouldn't be so judgemental seeing as I'm not paying anything.

I was at Mondo Video yesterday when Marc's new shipment of XXX-rated DVD's arrived. I couldn't believe anyone would rent this stuff - it appeared laughably bad.

That's only true of about 95% of the product.

How people are turned on of course varies widely

For some just seeing naked bods is enough to jack off too - others really need a Mind F**ck

yes, I'm washing my mouth out with soap now

I am almost done viewing "Irreversible" with Bellucci and Cassel. This is an a.m.a.z.i.n.g. movie. It has to be seen to be believed.

The visual style of the wandering camera is completely unlike anything else I've ever seen. Violent sex shot in an unsexual manner.

I'm rushing back to the DVD as we speak.

I had to stop watching this movie in the middle. It's one of the most sickening things I've ever seen. There is a long long looooong unbroken shot of a painful rape that is borderline porn. I loathe hate despise am disgusted by this film.

Rape is not "violent sex" in my glossary. It is violence, pure and simple.

billy, I wasn't speaking only of the rape.

TEENSY SPOILER-------------

I was also speaking about everything we see at the beginning at the gay bar, called The Rectum. We don't actually see a whole lot, but we can hear it...and it sounds violent to me.
I appreciate the point you're trying to make about "rape" however and agree with it. A LOT of people aren't going to be able to watch this movie - no question about it.
[The moviegoing experience doesn't usually cross over to _reality_ for me...I tend to remain detached thru stuff like the rape. I think it's because I worked on the _crew_, (not as an actor) and was around for filming of a lot of violence (1 rape scene - actually quite a difficult experience for me).

The film is NOT for everyone, but those who stick it out till the end will be rewarded. Telling the story backwards produces some startling revelations and makes everything come together. I have to admire Cassel and Bellucci for their commitment to difficult projects and for risking performances like these.

I kept trying to figure out how all the "wandering camera" shots were accomplished. If you are prone to motion sickness, this film might be _really_ hard to watch, esp. on the big screen. What's puzzling is that the camera keeps turning around and captures angles in every which direction - and you wonder why you don't see the director or the crew??

There is a DVD extra which explains how the images were manipulated by computer - this was how the SFX were done. The interview with the computer artist is short but extremely informative.

Needless to say the soundtrack is innovative and amazing.

I think I'd have the same reaction as Billy. I probably couldn't watch it.

Gary I'd guess that 90% would agree with you, and I completely understand. And Marc, it's heartening to find someone else out there who also understands that this is a difficult, but very good, film.

Based on a discussion we were having in the Book Forum I recently saw Ken Burn's documentary on Mark Twain.

Burn's surpasses everything he's ever done with this film. No matter what you might think of his other films this is one not to be missed!

IRREVERSIBLE is a real mindfucker. It subverts your assumptions and expectations as its plot unwinds going backwards in time. You assume the absolute worse about a totally reprehensible central character only to discover
the character is sympathetic and good. Yes, the violence is extreme and in your face. But, it is necessary. Rape is ugly, violent, obscene. Director Gaspar Noe rubs our faces in it. The better to make us understand and relate to the violent
retribution that follows (actually, precedes).

Gaspar Noe is, along with Claire Denis and Catherine Breillet, part of a movement in French cinema that explores transgression and the tolerance of their audiences. I think they make important films, though very hard to stomach at times. Recommended: FAT GIRL, I STAND ALONE and TROUBLE EVERY DAY.

For a mainstream film, 8MM was a very hard film to watch. I'm sure the scenes are not anywhere near what is in IRREVERSIBLE, but none the less, difficult.

This applies to the 2 other lead characters as well.
What fascinated me was how small things are gradually revealed as we move backwards in time. At the film's conclusion (that is, the beginning); we finally understand all that has passed before our eyes - and are able to look at it with completely new insight.

Another thing I liked is that the scenes are shot in _real time_. This doesn't happen very much in movies - where we are used to montage that compresses long events into a few minutes.

Visually much of the film seems to consist of long single takes with complex camera moves. Actually, this wasn't the case as I mentioned from seeing the SFX extra with the visual effects designer.

So the film has a MEMENTO-like structure? I may have to grit my teeth and view this one.
