I saw a trailer for Silver Linings and it looked great. Jennifer Lawrence cleans up real nice, after fending off meth dealers in the Ozarks or murdering teens in the woods.

I don't understand skipping Cloud Atlas, given that there's more sport to be had writing a bad review than a good one. Esp. for something that's bloated with expectation and hype. I want to join the throng, gawking at the car crash down the street, to borrow Knox's metaphor.

If it were a shorter film, I would agree. But three hours just to be able to snark? Life is too short.

Just looked up the running time: 172 minutes. GULP. Well, I can nurse a hope that I will find something in the complex nonlinear form of Cloud Atlas that will render all its philosophical musings and reincarnative meanderings into something splendid, and then this thread can be invigorated with an actual bone of contention, another "Signs," perhaps. There's also the fact that this is, to date, the world's most expensive independent film. We must encourage independent film. Wink

Was uninspired by the new releases on offer here.
I'll pick up Cosmopolis when my local store gets it.
Think I'll pass on Magic Mike, The Dictator and Woody's Rome film. I always watch Woody and SB Cohen films, but am pretty ambivalent on these. Might get to them at some point.

There is also a Julie Delpy film with Chris Rock, 2 Days in New York. Wow, her 2 Days in Paris was way back in 2007. I liked that. Anyone know anything about her new New York film? Seems to be a sequel. Took 5 years to make a sequel?

There was also a film Cloclo about the French pop singer Claude François. He died young in 1978, so there are pics of him looking kind of 70's cheesy on the internet. Anyone know anything about that film?

Claude Francois was involved in writing (apparently fixing up and partially re-writing) the French tune which was the basis for My Way. Paul Anka bought the rights to it and wrote new English lyrics.

I can't say if Cloud Atlas is worth anyone's time, and AO Scott's review -

http://movies.nytimes.com/2012/10/26/movies/cloud-atlas-from-lana-and-andy-wachowski-and-tom-tykwer.html?ref=movies

- suggests that it shows too much leg, philosophically. But his review does hint at some nuggets of gold to be found for a cinephile.

Here's a review of Cloud Atlas by a Winnipeg critic.

If anyone thinks this is a well done review, then they should know if they should bother seeing it or not.

Gromit, I've heard nothing but good about 2 Days in NY.

Christy Lemire sounds young and full of critical venom, which may not be a bad thing. Based on the above reviews, and others, I have to wonder if a movie that is really six mini-movies is by its nature only going to reach "the converted," i.e. fans of Mitchell's book and philosophic bent. It sounds like a couple of the mini-movies might be worth seeing, but maybe I can WFV. Happily, Arbitrage has arrived at the Univ. theater, so there's an alternative this weekend.

Cloud Atlas will gross approx. $11 million for the weekend. It looks like movie-goers are rejecting it. I'm not surprised. Word of mouth will be bad. The movie is impossible to follow unless you read the book. Most Americans don't read books.

I seem to remember you predicting The Beaver was going to be a huge hit. And Chicago was going to tank. I don't trust your predictions.

Nowhere in those comments do I say The Beaver is going to be a "huge hit." I said it was a critical hit at a festival in Austin and would surprise people who were writing it off without having even seen it. I also thought it might give a boost to Mel Gibson's career at a time when his career was in the garbage. In point of fact, he did get very good reviews for his performance. It was not a "huge hit" and I never thought it would be. It's not that kind of movie.

And Cloud Atlas is a bomb, as I predicted it would be when I reviewed it last month.

For The Beaver to give Gibson a third career, it would have to be a big hit. Well, it wasn't and it didn't.
